The gospel of pain.Thomas John Hardy - 1908 - London,: G. Bell and sons.
Excerpt from The Gospel of Pain Were it not thus, 0 King of my salvation, Many would curse to thee and I for one, Fling thee thy bliss and snatch at thy damnation, Scorn and abhor the rising of the sun. Ring with the reckless shivering of laughter Wroth at the woe which thou hast seen so long, Question if any recompense hereafter Waits to atone the intolerable wrong. Is there not wrong too bitter for atoning? What are these desperate (...)

Extending the global academic table: An introduction.Thomas John Hastings - 2016 - Zygon 51 (1):7-20.
Before commenting on the papers from a recent interdisciplinary gathering of scholars from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, a case is made for regional academia conversations today, because international conferences, especially in the humanities and social sciences, are still dominated by “Western” traditions, discourse, and protocols. After touching on the relative stability or variability of phenomena and procedures in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, political and cultural questions are considered along with some of the ongoing consequences of the (...)

    Kagawa toyohiko : Witness to the cosmic drama.Thomas John Hastings - 2016 - Zygon 51 (1):128-144.
At home and abroad, Kagawa Toyohiko was probably the best-known Japanese Christian evangelist, social reformer, writer, and public intellectual of the twentieth century, nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twice and the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Appealing to the masses with little knowledge of Christian faith, Kagawa believed that a positive, religio-aesthetic interpretation of nature and science was a key missiological concern in Japan. He reasoned that a faith rooted in the kenotic movement of incarnation and self-giving must (...)

Social Shutdowns as an Extraordinary Means of Saving Human Life.Thomas John Paprocki - 2020 - The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly 20 (3):545-559.
The effects of the novel coronavirus have raised questions about the extent to which social shutdowns are appropriate. We have a responsibility to protect the lives of others and an obligation to maintain our lives and health when possible, but there are circumstances when it is just to decline certain measures that are considered extraordinary to the situation. Measures taken to protect life must be proportionate. That is, they must offer a reasonable hope of benefit and not impose excessive burdens (...)

Views of Nature and Dualism : Rethinking Philosophical, Theological, and Religious Assumptions in the Anthropocene.Thomas John Hastings & Knut-Willy Sæther (eds.) - 2023 - Springer Nature Switzerland.
In the face of the anthropogenic threats to the singular planetary habitat we share with other human beings and non-human species, humanities scholars feel a renewed sense of urgency 1) to acknowledge the ways our species has funded particular histories of environmental exploitation, alienation, and collapse, 2) to unpack inherited assumptions that impact our views of nature and interspecies relations, and 3) to suggest ways of thinking and acting that seek to repair the damage and promote mutual flourishing for all (...)

John of St. Thomas [Poinsot] on Sacred Science: Cursus Theologicus I, Question 1, Disputation 2.John Of St Thomas - 2014 - South Bend, Indiana: St. Augustine's Press. Edited by John P. Doyle & Victor M. Salas.
This volume offers an English translation of John of St. Thomas's Cursus theologicus I, question I, disputation 2. In this particular text, the Dominican master raises questions concerning the scientific status and nature of theology. At issue, here, are a number of factors: namely, Christianity's continual coming to terms with the "Third Entry" of Aristotelian thought into Western Christian intellectual culture - specifically the Aristotelian notion of 'science' and sacra doctrina's satisfaction of those requirements - the Thomistic-commentary tradition, (...)

Musings on the Meno: a new translation with commentary.John Edward Thomas - 1980 - Hingham, MA: distributors for U.S. and Canada, Kluwer Boston. Edited by Plato.
The objectives of this book are to provide a new translation of Plato's M eno together with a series of studies on its philcisophical argument in the light of recent secondary literature. My translation is based mainly on the Oxford Classical Text, 1. Burnet's Platonis Opera (Oxford Clarendon Press 1900) Vol. III. In conjunction with this I have made extensive use of R.S. Bluck's Plato's Meno (Cam bridge University Press, 1964). At critical places in the dialogue I have also consulted (...)

Medicine and sociology: A parting of the ways.John E. Thomas - 1981 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 6 (4):411-422.
Sociology is a discipline in which sociologists are committed to the pursuit of knowledge but do not have an obligation to implement that knowledge by social action. The medical profession, by contrast, accepts an obligation to implement the knowledge it achieves in practice. This obligation is grounded in the fact that members of the medical profession are (a) the only candidates for the practitioner's role; (b) able to perform the practitioners role best; (c) committed to value appraisal judgments and (d) (...)

What I have to present before you today will be more in the form of work in progress than a finished paper on the subject of reasoning in children. This work grew out of an NEH Summer Seminar 1988 at the University of Massachusetts, directed by Gareth Matthews. I had a number of motivations for attending this seminar, but the primary one was to have the opportunity to look at the work of Piaget on children's reasoning. The primary reason why (...)

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to help bridge the digital divide that arises from people having such different viewpoints that little communication is possible, even though all have access to the internet and speak the same language. Design/methodology/approach The method is to catalog the best practices in collaboration and cooperation in the form of a pattern language. After describing pattern languages, some examples are given. Findings People have been trying to cooperate in many cultures over many centuries, and (...)

Following a position similar to that of Alexandre Kojève, K. R. Dove has made the interesting suggestion that Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit “was probably the first philosophical treatise whose method was radically and consistently non-dialectical.” Later in his article Dove gives us an indication of the import which his statement has for an interpretation of the work. He says.

Implications of real-world distributions and the conversation game for studies of human probability judgments.John C. Thomas - 2007 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 30 (3):282-283.
Subjects in experiments use real-life strategies that differ significantly from those assumed by experimenters. First, true randomness is rare in both natural and constructed environments. Second, communication follows conventions which depend on the game-theoretic aspects of situations. Third, in the common rhetorical stance of storytelling, people do not tell about the representative but about unusual, exceptional, and rare cases.

Just War Doctrine – Relic or Relevant?John Thomas - 2021 - Russian Journal of Philosophical Sciences 63 (11):7-38.
In the article, I examine the relevance of Just War Doctrine to contemporary conflicts. Just War Doctrine, which grew out of Western Christian thinking, presupposes that evil might be confronted with force, if there is no alternative way to restore a just order. But modern trends call into question the certainty and universality of this doctrine. On the one hand, ideas of moral relativism and comparative justice have become more widespread, potentially undermining the use of the notions “just” and “justified” (...)
